Gaffer™ Trident Seal Test

Why do we test all of our batch runs using the "Trident Seal Test"?

We use the "Trident Seal Test" to make sure that we are weighing and mixing correctly. We use this test because it is far more accurate than any other test including a dilatometer test. Here's how it works.

  • The Gaffer™ batch is melted according to an exact reproducible schedule. (Changing the way one melts can a affect the C.O.E.)
  • Small round canes are pulled, round as possible, 3 mm untapered.
  • These canes are then fused with canes of a master glass of a known expansion, and then annealed.
  • The annealed test is examined using a polarimeter and any difference in C.O.E. can be precisely measured.
  • All tests are then filed for future references.
  • Examine the piece with you fingernail to feel for cracks or bumps on the ends of the sample. Any cracks subsequent to annealing, the tests will not yield accurate results.

If any particular batch does not pass the "Trident Seal Test" the batch is not allowed to continue through production.
